Most coffee faults are better diagnosed by workflow and heating system than by repeating the same checklist across hundreds of model names. Choose the category that matches how your machine brews.
Pump espresso machines
Single boilers, thermoblocks, heat exchangers and dual boilers with a portafilter
First diagnostic split
Separate a coffee-preparation problem from a water-flow problem. Run a brief water-only test without the portafilter after the machine is fully heated.
Common symptom checks
- Fast, pale espresso: grind finer, confirm the basket dose and distribute evenly before tamping.
- No flow with coffee but normal water-only flow: the puck or basket is restricting the group; use a coarser grind and clear the basket holes.
- Weak steam: purge condensation, check that the steam tip holes are clear when cool, then allow the machine to recover fully.
Service boundary
Do not remove covers, loosen boiler fittings or probe electrical components. A breaker trip, burning smell, steam inside the case or water under electrical areas needs authorised service.
Integrated-grinder espresso machines

First diagnostic split
Test the grinder and brewer separately. Confirm the empty grinder runs normally, then test group-head water flow without coffee before changing several settings at once.
Common symptom checks
- Dose changes unexpectedly: clean the dry grinder path and hopper gate, then weigh three consecutive doses.
- Grinder runs but no grounds emerge: empty beans safely, inspect for an oily-bean bridge and follow the manual's upper-burr cleaning procedure.
- Pressure is low: do not chase the gauge alone; first confirm fresh beans, dose, grind setting, basket type and an even puck.
Service boundary
Never add water to a grinder or force a jammed adjustment collar. Follow the exact manual before removing a user-removable upper burr.
Fully automatic machines
Bean-to-cup machines with an internal brew unit and automatic drink programs
First diagnostic split
Read the display message exactly, empty and correctly reseat the drip tray and grounds bin, refill water, then restart only as the manufacturer directs.
Common symptom checks
- Coffee arrives in drips: choose a coarser grinder setting only while the grinder is running if the manual requires it, then assess after several drinks.
- Watery coffee: check bean freshness, strength setting and whether the brew unit needs its approved rinse or clean.
- Milk sputters or draws no milk: dismantle only the external milk parts shown in the manual and clear dried milk with the specified cleaning routine.
Service boundary
Internal brew-unit gears, mains-powered valves and sealed grinders are not safe DIY areas. Do not lubricate parts unless the exact food-safe product and location are specified.
Capsule machines
Nespresso-compatible and proprietary capsule systems, with or without milk attachments
First diagnostic split
Eject the capsule, empty the used-capsule bin, refill and reseat the tank, then run the manufacturer-approved water-only rinse cycle.
Common symptom checks
- Cup volume changed: reset or reprogram the volume using the exact button sequence in the manual.
- Capsule is crushed or leaks: stop and check capsule compatibility, orientation and a clear capsule chamber after it cools.
- Pump sounds loud with no water: reseat a full tank and follow the official priming procedure rather than repeatedly running the pump dry.
Service boundary
Do not reach into the piercing mechanism or defeat the closing interlock. Capsule blades remain sharp after the machine is unplugged.
Filter and batch brewers
Automatic drip, precision batch and pour-over-style electric brewers
First diagnostic split
Check the water path without coffee: tank seating, shower outlet, basket position and carafe valve. Then confirm the paper and grind are not blocking drainage.
Common symptom checks
- Basket overflows: grind coarser, reduce the dose, use the correct filter shape and make sure the carafe opens the basket valve.
- Brew tastes weak: verify the coffee-to-water ratio by weight before changing temperature or grind.
- Machine stops early: descale only with the approved procedure and confirm the tank level sensor area is clean.
Service boundary
Never immerse a powered brewer or scrape a coated hotplate. Cracked carafes, damaged cords and persistent heater faults require replacement or service.
Manual, lever and portable brewers

First diagnostic split
Let pressure fall completely before disassembly. Confirm the correct water temperature, dose, grind and seal placement before assuming a mechanical fault.
Common symptom checks
- Lever is unusually hard: stop; the grind may be too fine or the basket overdosed. Do not force pressure against a blocked puck.
- Pressure will not build: inspect user-removable seals for correct seating, coffee debris or visible damage when cool.
- Water escapes around the basket: clean the sealing surfaces and lock the assembly only to the maker's instructed position.
Service boundary
Never open a pressurised chamber. Replace damaged pressure seals with exact approved parts and retire any cracked pressure-bearing component.
